I came up with the above solution to the market scales puzzle introduced in class. I thought that the weight I use would have to add up to the max weight being measured, and the first 2-3 weights have to be close together so as to account for the consecutive numbers. For the first, I was surprised to find the answer to be powers of 3 as I was working with powers of 2 for the longest time but accidentally ended up solving part b.
Great work on the puzzle, Manveen! There's still something else to add: how would you use this in your own teaching of high school math? Is there a topic or topics that could connect with this puzzle?
ReplyDeleteHi Susan, thanks for your comment. Initially, I did not think that I could use this in my classroom for any other purpose than exploring numbers and different bases and their powers but upon having a discussion with my peers in the garden, I can see how this can be used as a great way to teach Combinatorics and even connect it to the computer science discipline.
